Silo Busting Leadership and Failing Fast, Small, and Cheap
Wan How
Wan How is a career and project management coach specializing in helping project professionals advance their careers. In his project management career, Wan successfully rescued many troubled projects. These included turning around projects headed for failure within 30 days and compressing project timelines by half to deliver benefits in one year instead of two.
Wan is a graduate of Cambridge University and has over 20 years of project management experience in traditional, agile and hybrid approaches. As the leader of a Project Management Office, he led a team of project managers and business analysts to deliver corporate projects tied to the organization's business plan and strategic objectives. He has worked in the information technology, government, higher education, oil and gas, and engineering sectors.
Abstract: Silo Busting Leadership and Failing Fast, Small, and Cheap
Project managers need a distinctive style of leadership to break down silos. The typical type of leadership is vertically oriented, top down, command and control. In contrast, to be effective, PMs need to exhibit horizontal leadership to build trust and facilitate alignment across stakeholder groups. This is what silo-busting leadership is all about. It's the type of leadership needed for organization-wide digital transformation projects. The all-or-nothing perfectionistic approach to delivering digital transformation projects could lead to
longer timelines and higher costs. Customers with short attention spans crave instant gratification. Those who don't have the patience to wait for you to digitize your business can switch to a competitor with a click of the button. Keep your customers and win new ones by fast-tracking your digital transformation. Deliver something small and useful quickly to get customer feedback. Embrace smart failures, learn and pivot. Build on small successes by iterating with tiny changes. Carefully engineer this process to build the engine of continuous digital growth.
